A Significant Day for us

It may not sound like a big deal, but moving the camper is a multi-day ordeal. It’s unpacking, repacking, moving loose items and clearing and cleaning around where the camper has been sitting.

We’ve done this process now a few times, and, frankly, it never gets easier. It’s always a lot of work, and quite stressful. No move has had quiet as much weight as this one.

First, we’ve struggled all summer with rain, which has made the trail un-drivable and muddy, sometimes even un-walkable. But we’ve just had almost 2 full weeks of mostly dry days, with only minimal rain, so this is the window we’ve been waiting for.

Secondly, despite our diligence in clearing the trail, there are still steps, holes, muddy spots and obstacles to navigate around. And when your entire life is in a small camper, you always worry about the worst case scenarios.

Thirdly, this has been the goal from day 1. Getting the camper to a spot on the land where it can be permanently situated, and allow us to feel more grounded and settled.

So today, after many days of moving stuff into the property and around the camper, cutting grass, clearing stumps, we moved the camper.

Admittedly, we both woke up feeling quite stressed about it. Would the truck give us issues (she’s still having problems we haven’t fixed yet)? Would we get stuck in mud? Would we be able to navigate the gauntlet of holes, stumps, mud, debris and roots?

If you consider we have moved the camper over 2500km since we owned it, a 150m move seems wildly insignificant. But today’s move stands out.

The camper is finally in the spot we have wanted to have it positioned since day 1. It has taken us almost 20 months to get to this exact spot. A significant delay in our original (if naive) plans.

From here, the camper will not move. It will stay here until we decided to dismantle it or eventually find somewhere else for it to go, but for now…it is home.

And tonight, for the first time in our minds, we are home too.
